Pope's mobile sets new e-Bay record - 03/05/2005

Pope Benedict XVI's old Volkswagen has attracted nearly four million hits on the on-line auction house e-Bay, the company has announced.

The metallic grey 1999 VW Golf IV was put on-line at a reserve price of ¬9,999 and has since attracted 136 genuine offers, pushing the price up to ¬62,595.

The four million hits represent a record for the site, according to a spokespersion.

"It was viewed more often than any other item we have ever had on eBay Germany," its Berlin headquarters said.

The auction will close on Thursday, and it is expected that the price will rise further.

It has been put on sale by Benjamin Halbe, a 21-year old German, who bought the car from a used car dealer, with no idea that its former owner, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, would become pope.

Halbe laughingly quipped: "It's a heavenly ride."
