Luxury new hybrid from Toyota- 13/04/2005

A new brand of luxury hybrid cars is set for a global launch in the first half of 2006 by Toyota.

Toyota will be looking to keep itself at the forefront of the gar-electric hybrid car by launching the first such vehicles to be able to compete with such European luxury car manufacturers as BMW and Mercedes.

The hybrid car market is currently dominated by small cars, minivans and SUVs, with Toyota's Prius model leading the way since its launch back in 1997.

Toyota recorded record sales of its hybrid Prius model in the first quarter of 2005 in the UK. Since its relaunch in spring 2004, the car has capitalised on the burgeoning interest in hybrid models.

The first of the new cars to be released in the Toyota GS luxury saloon, which will be released simultaneously in the Japanese, European and North American markets in the first half of 2006.
