Volkswagen considers New luxury Passat - 12/04/2005
Volkswagen is considering plans to launch a luxury coupe version of its Passat model, in what would be a major expansion of premium-car strategy.
According to Germany's Freie Presse newspaper, VW is planning to produce between 50,000 and 60,000 of the cars. The newspaper listed no source, however.
However, a VW spokesman refused to either confirm or deny the rumours, although he did confirm that the car manufacturer was considering the introduction of an up-market Passat coupe.
The mid-sized Volkswagen Passat is the second best-selling VW model, ranking only behind the compact Golf in terms of sales figures.
Volkswagen introduced the new sixth-generation Passat in Germany last month, and set to launch it worldwide in the near future.
Any luxury coupe version would quell rumours that Volkswagen is set to concentrate all its efforts on mass-market production.
