Independent is impressed by new Golf Plus - 15/02/05

The Independent newspaper has given a glowing review to the new VW Golf Plus.

There are a number of tweaks to the classic VW Golf frame - the car is a few inches taller, front seats are three inches higher, and the two-storey boot is larger.

The Independent's John Simister sees the car's extra room as a nod to the MPV market, which is currently booming: "It's entirely possible that the five-door version of the future Golf Mk6 will be Golf Plus-shaped, leaving the three-door as the regular low-line hatchback."

Inside, the Golf Plus benefits from high specification - sat nav technology, fancy cupholders, DVD screens in the back and fully adjustable cantilever seats.

In terms of driveability, Mr Simister comments that: "The Plus should feel like a Golf, but taller and maybe more precarious. Surprisingly, the Plus stays virtually as taut and flat as a regular Golf.

"The Plus actually has more pleasing steering than the regular Golf," adds Mr Simister, believing the Plus' revised body topology gives better results.

VW's Plus 2.0-litre, direct-injection FSI petrol engine delivers 150bhp, which is described as being "smooth, sporty-sounding, eager to rev but willing to pull".

It is expected that the new Golf Plus will provide competition in an already crowded market for the Ford Focus, Renault Megane, and Seat Altea.
