RAC reports increased profits - 16/02/2005

The RAC motoring company has reported a two per cent increase in annual profits but confirmed flat sales by its roadside services arm.

The UK-based company, whose businesses include the BSM driving school, reported pre-tax profits of £88.6 million against a total of £86.7 million in 2003.

However, RAC acknowledged that it found members of its roadside services service harder to retain in 2004, with membership remaining at 2.2 million

The company's Auto Windscreen service saw sales fall by two per cent to £95.2 million, mainly because it failed to secure a number of key contracts with insurers.

BSM, which provides driving tuition to 157,000 new and experienced motorists, reported a ten per cent increase to £34.9 million as it continues to benefit from a strong market.

Chief executive Andy Harrison said: "The new financial year has started well and I remain confident in our future prospects."
