Manufacturers coorperate to develop new kind of car - 01/04/2005
PSA Peugeot Citroen is to cooperate with Fiat and Tofas in developing a car to meet the anticipated changes in the entry-level sector of the European light commercial vehicle market.
In a joint statement, the manufacturers said that they hope to produce "a compact, economical, multi-purpose commercial vehicle that will be modern, sturdy and attractive".
The new car is slated for release in 2008, and will be expected to extend the Peugeot, Citroen and Fiat ranges.
It is expected that the new models will use especially fuel-efficient engines, allowing the three manufacturers to meet the demands of the market for environmentally-sound and financially-efficient motors that are equally at home on the open road as they are in the city.
The vehicles will be produced in Tofas' plant near Bursa in Turkey.
The annual production capacity for these vehicles will be of 135,000 units, of which two-thirds for PSA Peugeot Citroen and one-third for Fiat, including Tofas.
