New Mazda Miata MX-5 unveiled at Geneva - 02/03/2005
The Geneva Motor Show has witnessed the unveiling of the new Mazda MX-5 Miata.
The new model is a modernisation of the existing Miata, which has sold 700,000 units since its inception 16 years ago.
The MX-5 comes equipped with a 2.0 litre inline four cylinder engine, up from the 1.8 found in the old Miata.
The larger engine is capable of 20 more horsepower, taking its capacity up to 160 hp. The torque now climbs to 140lb-ft as well.
The car comes with a choice of two gear systems, either a manual or an automatic with a paddles option.
The MX-5 is physically larger than the existing model too, with a 2.6-inch longer wheelbase, as well as a 3.0-inch wider front track and 2.1-inch wider rear track.
The traditional "coke bottle" shape of the Miata has been abandoned too, and is replaced by a design that resembles the RX-8.
More spacious than the previous incarnation, the car's cabin is also fitted with side-impact airbags.
And all this in a car less than three and a half metres long.
Mazda says it developed the car in response to the public's desire for compact, appealing, dynamic models.
