One in eight private cars is a Ford - 07/03/2005
New figures released by the Society of Motor and Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that one in eight cars bought privately this year is a Ford.
This means Ford's share of the market is 90 per cent greater than its nearest competitor.
The statistics also showed that the Ford Focus is Britain's most popular car, both with private buyers and company car drivers.
The statistics confirmed the prediction of Paul Thomas, Ford Britain's managing director, who commented: "We said Ford's retail performance would accelerate when announcing our February sale prices.
"I'm delighted private buyers responded so well and snapped up the cars on offer so quickly."
Defying the traditionally lean period in February, Ford sold 11,709 cars and 3,905 commercial vehicles last month.
With the new '05'-registration plate just released, Mr Thomas is optimistic about the company's prospects.
"Now all eyes are on March and already thousands of motorists are enjoying their new '05'-plated Fords," he said.
