Toyota Prius embraced by construction industry - 03/05/2005

The construction looks set to embrace more environmentally-friendly technology as one of the largest component and tool distributors in the south-east has adopted the Toyota Prius into its fleet.

Richard Edwards, the managing director of KEM Edwards, has announced that his company has just taken on two petrol-electric Toyota Prius models, with a further two on order.

The Toyota Prius cars are being used by accounts managers who each cover between 25,000 and 30,000 miles a year.

"The construction business is quite macho and at first there was resistance to the idea of using 'electric cars', but that passed as soon as the vehicles arrived," says Richard Edwards.

Mr Edwards went on: "We are also saving money by using the Prius because they are leaner and cleaner. The advantage to the staff in terms of economy and tax provides a double benefit."

He went on: "With the Prius there is also a bit of an ego thing with all the gadgets - when you have such a unique set-up on the road it does make you feel that bit exclusive."
