Ford Fiesta officially axed in 2023!

Published Date: 23rd Jan 2023

Ford has announced that the Ford Fiesta, one of its most iconic models and a British classic for over four decades, will officially be discontinued in June 2023. This news has shocked many Ford fans who grew up with the model and have seen it become an integral part of UK roads. With production set to end soon, now is the time for Ford enthusiasts to get their hands on this timeless car before they're all gone! The Ford Fiesta will be removed from dealerships in June 2023 after 46 years on sale, during which time almost five million Fiestas have been produced.

Ford is set to concentrate on EVs and SUVs, with models such as the Ford Puma crossover and electric Mustang Mach-E becoming mainstays of the manufacturer’s range.

The Fiesta first appeared in 1976 and became a staple car for UK drivers. Over the years, it has become a popular choice for new drivers and has a huge following on the classic car scene in the UK.

The Fiesta was the UK’s best-selling car for 11 years in a row, but with production due to end in 2023, new examples of the Fiesta are likely to be snapped up quickly in the next few months.

Small cars are notoriously difficult for manufacturers to make a profit on, with development costs not much less for a small model than heavier, more expensive ones; marketing costs and tooling up factories for production also bring similar expenses, regardless of the size of a car.

Strict EU rules on vehicle emissions are also likely to have had an impact on Ford’s reported decision: while small, light cars like the Fiesta tend to produce less carbon dioxide than larger, heavier vehicles, carmakers are allowed to offset recorded CO2 based on the average weight of the vehicles they sell, a legislative policy that does smaller, lighter vehicles no favours.

The global semiconductor chip shortage has also affected car makers’ strategies almost across the board. With essential computer chips harder to come by, manufacturers prioritise the production of vehicles with strong profit margins rather than those with a less attractive business case.
