New petrol and diesel cars banned by 2025?

Traditional fossil fuelled new cars may be a thing of the past sooner than we think, as the Dutch senate are reviewing a motion passed by the parliament. The first initiation of this green and eco-friendly ruling came from the Dutch labour party or (PvdA) and has since gathered enormous momentum.

Great news for electric new car manufacturers, like Tesla

If the law passed it would ensure a major boost for the sales of new electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in Holland, along with a future investment opportunities for the manufacturers. The use of existing petrol and diesel vehicles would carry on but the sale of new diesel or petrol cars would be blocked by the government.

At the moment one in ten new cars sold in the Netherlands is electric. Similar plans are being discussed around Europe with Norway looking to cut emissions in Oslo by 50% by banning private cars in 2019 and the mayor of Paris previously announced that all diesel cars will be removed from the city by 2020.

Our take on this cleaner future is to introduce an ultra low emission zone in London using the existing congestion zone boundaries and introduce the same system to Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Derby and Southampton by 2020.
