Published Date: 3rd Dec 2015
The FIA have allowed the normal 20-race F1 Calendar to be extended by an extra race to make it a 21 race Formula 1 Season.
At the meeting of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council in Paris just this week confirmed a change in the F1 race limit regulations; this increased the maximum permitted number of races in a season from 20 to 21. The 2016 Formula 1 championship will therefore have more races than any other season in Formula 1 history, beating the record set of 20 races in an F1 season back in 2012.
One new race has been added to the 2016 F1 Race Calendar - Baku, Azerbaijan to take place June 17-19 – and we will also see the return of Hockenheim Grand Prix in Germany, Hockenheim alternates with the Nurburgring to take place every other year. Australia keeps its fixture as the season opener, on March 18-20, and Abu Dhabi will host the final race for a fifth time in a row, on November 25-27.
The 2016 calendar will have two races on consecutive weekends six times (great for avid Formula 1 fans - Canada and Baku, Austria and Great Britain, Hungary and Germany, Belgium and Italy, Malaysia and Japan, and the USA and Mexico will all be held together within consecutive weekends. USA’s time schedule remains provisional at the moment.
