Volkswagen UK car sales Drop 20 per cent after Emission Scandal

Published Date: 10th Dec 2015

The VW emissions scandal has resulted in the German car-maker’s sales falling 20 per cent as the rest of the car market returns to positive growth

Volkswagen sales dropped by a fifth in November when compared with last years figures as the emissions scandal directly affected the demand for German car giant's vehicles.

The Official data released from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that 12,958 VW cars were sold in November, with last year’s figure standing at 16,196 during the same month.

The Volkswagen AG Group has been stung since it emerged in September 2015 that they had fitted over 500,000 diesel cars in the US with "defeat devices" that give the cars the power to cheat the emission tests, by running in a ghost mode.

Since then VW have admitted that a figure 11m cars globally could be affected. An internal investigation at German car-maker also revealed that a further 800,000 cars have inconsistency in their data when tested.

The fall in Volkswagen AG sales didn’t dampen the UK Car market, where sales were up 3.8% on last years figure with 178,876 cars registered – a great figure for the continued growth of the new car market.

November turned around the 1.1% decline that we saw in October, where the SMMT reported that 43 months of growth had come to an ended and for a while the car market’s feet we back on the ground after a record-breaking period in UK Car Registrations.

Britain’s biggest car sellers – Ford and Vauxhall, both returned to growth, with sales up 12.7% and 25.7% respectively, this is just after their October figures showed a decline of 8.8% and 16.4% a month ago.

Oxford Economics conducted a study, which predicted little impact on the UK Car Market but explained: "Customers may shun VW vehicles at the margin and, to a lesser extent, diesels in general but total vehicle demand is unlikely to decline significantly unless the scandal spreads, in particular, towards implying much higher real-world running costs than at present due to over-statement of fuel efficiency."
