The cheap New Mini Convertible

Following closely behind the cheap new Megane's ample boot space came the new Audi A4 Cabriolet, which tempted 4,529 buyers with its clean, understated lines.

Speaking to Auto Express a Mini spokeswoman said (in a tiny voice): "The Mini Cabriolet is popular because it's got all the good aspects of the standard Mini and you can take the roof off. It has a very quick and easy-to-use mechanism."

In fourth and fifth place came the new Peugeot 307 CC and cheap new 206 CC respectively, giving the French firm 8,839 UK drop-top sales and making it the best selling convertible manufacturer in the UK market.

Sixth and seventh places were taken up by a battle between old rivals, Mercedes and BMW, with the SLK selling just two more units than the new BMW 3 Series cabriolet.

Despite the unreliable weather the UK is Europe's largest market for new convertibles and the topless Saab 9-3, cheap new Vauxhall Tigra and Mazda MX-5 all sold around 3,900 units to fill the eighth to tenth positions.
