The Pulsar name originated in 1978 and was mostly used for models in Australasian and Asian markets over the last forty years. The Nissan Pulsar appeared in some markets around Europe in the early 1990s.

Nissan explained the hatchback is "designed to meet the specific demands of European car buyers" and will also feature "the same high quality, high innovation approach that has come to typify Nissan models".

The New Nissan Pulsar model has been a long awaited replacement for the Nissan Almera and the new five-door hatchback that will go on sale very soon, it will compete with the Vauxhall Astra, Renault Megane, Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus.
