UK Driver Seatbelt Penalties?

£500 fine, anyone?

UK drivers who fail to wear their seatbelts could soon face penalty points on their licences if UK regulators adopt stricter laws. Research conducted by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) reveals that almost one in four people killed on UK roads were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of their fatal accident – a statistic that has prompted some UK politicians to call for an increase in punishments for those who drive without buckling up.

UK law currently requires all passengers and drivers to wear seatbelts, but there is no penalty for failing to do so. This means that motorists can continue driving with impunity even if they don’t wear them, contrary to what is advised by safety experts. The potential new regulations would see UK drivers hit with three penalty points – as well as up to a £500 fine – if caught without a seatbelt, with more severe punishments meted out for repeat offenders.

At the moment, you do not receive penalty points for not wearing your seatbelt, but many motor industry exports think this should change to ensure people take the seat belt rules more seriously.

The potential UK regulations come after years of campaigning from several UK-based road safety charities, including Brake and RoSPA. According to RoSPA’s statistics, 366 people were killed in road traffic accidents in 2015 while not wearing a seatbelt – which accounts for almost one-quarter of all fatalities on UK roads during that period. RoSPA also notes that while most drivers and passengers usually buckle up when travelling long distances, many don't think twice about going without when travelling short distances or when making small trips around town – something which could prove particularly fatal should an accident occur.

Wear a seatbelt and surviveIndividuals not wearing a seatbelt are at much greater risk of sustaining life-threatening injuries or deaths in a crash due to the lack of protection provided by the restraint system; this makes it essential always to wear a seatbelt when driving or riding in any type of motor vehicle. Injuries from car crashes account for over 80% of all accidental deaths annually among young adults aged between 16-25; thus highlighting why it is so important everyone wears a seatbelt whenever they get into a vehicle, as failure to do so carries potentially devastating consequences.

In addition to this, not wearing a seatbelt increases the risk of being fined and receiving penalty points; being ejected from the vehicle upon impact; increasing the force caused by airbags upon deployment; and incurring additional costs through car repairs and medical expenses due to injury or death sustained by other passengers as well as yourself. The long-term psychological effects suffered by family members can be just as damaging, too, should someone lose their life due to failing to buckle up - further reinforcing why it is absolutely essential always wear your seatbelts whenever you get into our cars!
