Top Two Speed Cameras in Greater Manchester net £1.8m in Just 8 Months

18,000 drivers have been hit with speeding fines between Junction18 at Simister Island and Junction20 at Rochdale over an 8 month period.

73 motorists a day were caught out on short stretch of the M62.

The 17,991 commuters were snapped by speed cameras between junction 18 at Simister island and junction 20 at Rochdale between February 2015 and September 2015.

Each violation over the 50mph speed limit comes with a £100 ticket, meaning a massive £1.8m has posted out in fines.

After a probing Freedom of Information legislation, it was established that cameras on the westbound side of the motorway between junction 20 and 19 snapped over 11,000 speeders.

Whereas, the cameras on the eastbound side if the carriageway between junctions 18 and 19 clocked over 6,500 speeders.

These speed cameras were installed as part of Temporary speed restrictions that have been in place on a 17-mile stretch of motorway between Sale and Rochdale for just under a year while a £207m smart motorway upgrade continues.

Harry Fairhead, policy analyst for the TaxPayers’ Alliance announced: “Speed cameras should be deployed to improve safety, not to act as revenue raisers.

"The authorities should be considerate of already heavily-taxed motorists and make sure they are not being punitive; in return drivers need to make sure they are within the rules – it really is a two-way street.”

A spokesman for Highways England explained: “We now have over 300 road workers out on the smart motorway route between Sale and Rochdale and narrow lanes are in place on most of the route. “It’s therefore vital drivers stick to the 50mph speed limit to stay safe.

“Around 180,000 vehicles use this section of motorway every day and these latest figures show that the vast majority are obeying the temporary limit. There are over 100 signs warning drivers about the 50mph limit and speed cameras, which are there for their own and our road workers’ safety.”
