The New Honda Civic Type R
Published Date: 27th May 2007
On sale in the UK since March 2007, the new Honda Civic Type R has had some great reviews.
WhatCar? gave it four out of a possible 5 stars in its verdict and commented ‘Does all the hot hatch things, brilliantly, and it’s easy to live with too’ adding ‘It’s a Honda, so reliability is a given. It really feels like it’ll last many miles of hard driving, too.’
With a 2.0 litre, 16v engine, the updated Civic Type R has a 6-speed manual gearbox and gives 198 bhp – just 1bhp more than the previous model. However, because the Honda Type R is lighter than its rivals like the VW Golf GTi, it can do 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds.
To make it stand out from the Civic Type S, the Type R features the red ‘H’ badge, a black mesh grille, body coloured wheel arch mouldings plus the seats are in red with suede edging.
The Honda Civic Type R is good value with the basic model coming in at £17,600, although most people will probably be more interested in the GT model which still only costs £18,600. This model is cheaper than the VW Golf GTi and still comes with a good specification which includes air-conditioning, cruise control and dual curtain airbags. The highest level model Civic Type R costs £20,000 and includes sat-nav and a hands-free phone kit.
Car Magazine also recently reviewed the new Civic Type R and said ‘The brief was to build a new Type R that exhibits all the brio of the old model, yet makes a giant leap in terms of refinement and usability that customers now want….. It worked. The new Type R is quieter, more comfortable and just plain more enjoyable in day-to-day driving than the car it replaces’.
