New Car Sales Rise

Published Date: 7th Jun 2006

New figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) suggest that sales of new cars rose last month.

The industry has been somewhat surprised by the findings, which suggest a turnaround in the fortunes of the car industry.

Christopher Macgowan, a spokesperson for the SMMT, commented: "In what is proving to be a competitive market, the rise in May figures reflects a small upturn in consumer confidence."

"We hope that easing fuel prices, a burst of better weather and a strong England performance in Germany will be reflected in new car sales in the coming weeks."

Meanwhile the Ford Focus headed polls as Britain's best-selling car today, with 14,000 registrations recorded in May.

The Vauxhall Astra came second with the Ford Fiesta trailing behind in third place at 9,248 registrations.
