The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has recently announced that new car registrations for March 2008 were higher than expected and are up 0.5% on March 2007 figures. As a result of this the SMMT has upwardly adjusted its estimate for car sales in 2008.
March 2008 saw 451,642 new car registrations with the Ford Focus still the most popular new car. Due to increased sales of Ford Fiesta in March it has now overtaken the Vauxhall Astra for second place. Other models which sold well in March were the Peugeot 207 and the Vauxhall Corsa.
Overall, registration of superminis was up 4.3% and accounted for 35.3% of the market plus diesel or alternatively fuelled vehicles saw sales grow – up 7.7% and 14.7%. The number one diesel car in the UK is currently the VW Golf. The alternative fuel market is steadily increasing with first quarter sales 15.1% higher than in 2007. The most popular alternative fuel vehicle is the Toyota Prius.
