With a manual six-speed gear box as standard the new BMW 130i reaches 60mph in a startling 6.1 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 155mph. The new BMW 130i is available with two spec levels, the standard SE or the tricked up M Sport option, and it has to be said the M Sport looks the part.

The line of the aggressive front splitter is tracked along the car by subtle side skirts and finished at the back of the car with a vented rear bumper.

The option of 17 or 18 inch alloys completes the look, while the same M Sport suspension as the new BMW M3 and new M5 stiffens up the ride and improves handling.

Inside the car drivers of the new BMW 1-Series 130i M Sports will enjoy a leather steering wheel and sports seats.

In terms of cost, image and performance the 130i will be going up against the highly specced versions of the new Golf Gti, new Ford Focus ST and the highly impressive but relatively cheap new Vauxhall Astra VXR.

With four big hitting, ultra-hot hatches all going on sale over the next three months the future looks exciting for this sector.
