Transport for London Proposes Increase on Congestion Charge

Transports for London wants to increase congestion charges from £10 to £11.50, and then from £12 to £14 if paid the next day.

They will be holding a consultation for Londoners to have their voices and opinions heard on the increases. Based on the consultants finding the TfL will prepare a broad report for the mayor of London: Boris Johnson, who will then begin to make a decision on whether to sanction the increases or not.

However, many fleet industry bodies have raises some concerns over the proposal. Gerry Keaney chief executive of BVRLA said an increase “is in effect a tax rise on essential business users who have had no choice but to drive in central London”, meanwhile the Freight Transport Association has appealed to TfL to rethink the proposed price increase.

AA President Edmund King explained that, “This proposed 15% hike in the congestion charge solidifies what every London city driver knows - that the charge has a little less to do with congestion or low CO2 emissions and more to do with cash flow, effectively a tax. Congestion in the London is already considerably above pre-charge levels but this is not related to an increase in the number of private vehicle users.
