2020 Ford Kuga Vignale exterior

The Kuga is Ford’s mid-sized Crossover/SUV, the latest model has been completely redesigned, its former boxy looks are replaced with more elegant styling moving it closer to the Ford Focus with which it shares the same platform.

The latest Ford Kuga model offers higher levels of tech as standard, including new GEO awareness technology which can detect emissions free zone and alert the driver to switch the vehicle to EV Now Mode.

Rear occupancy alert is added as standard too, a system that alerts the driver when leaving the vehicle with a passenger in the rear.

There is also more interior space, Ford say rear passenger leg room is amongst best in class. The Kuga competes with other mid-sized SUVs like the Nissan Qashqai, KIA Sportage and Renault Kadjar in a very competitive segment.

The trim-level line-up has been simplified a tad and a new/revised engine range includes a plug-in hybrid option for the first time.

The centrepiece of the dashboard is the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by Ford’s SYNC 3 platform, it includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto support and native navigation. Also included is Ford’s e-Call (it can automatically call/notify emergency services in the unlikely event of an accident).

There’s also wireless mobile phone charging in the front (for supported phones) and a charging point in the rear for second row passengers.

Space is freed up with the use of an electric parking brake and there’s also keyless engine start.

Driver & Safety Tech

Driver tech is generous enough for an entry-level model, included are cruise control with speed limiter, front and rear parking sensors, pre-collision assist and automated emergency braking.  Additional safety/driver aids include a lane keeping assistant with lane departure warning, hill launch assist and intelligent speed assistant.

You also get four selectable drive modes; Normal, Eco, Sport and Slippery, the latter sets up the car for more demanding conditions like ice, snow or very wet/muddy conditions.

Other safety features include ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System). All round airbags include front and side airbags for driver and front passenger (with a deactivation switch for front passenger), driver’s knee airbag and curtain airbags (front and rear).

Engines

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) engine is NOT available with entry-level Zetec models, if it’s a deal breaker, skip the Zetec trim.

There is no all-wheel drive option with entry-level Zetec trim, start your search with Titanium trim combined with the most powerful 190PS EcoBlue engine if all-wheel drive is a must.

You get a choice of two 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engines; a 120PS unit and a more powerful 150PS option. The multi-award winning EcoBoost engines are refined and smooth.

While the 120PS is a good around town runner offering low running costs (combined fuel economy of up to 50mpg and emissions as low as 128g/km) it might feel a little bit underpowered if you are frequently travelling with a full load of passengers or do regular travel on motorways.

The 150PS petrol feels nippier (its about 2-seconds quicker from 0-62mph) and it offers more pulling power on motorways with heavy loads. It will cost about £1300-£1400 more than the lower-powered EcoBoost but pretty much matches its economy figures despite packing more of a punch.

Two diesels are also available with Zetec trim, a 1.5 litre EcoBlue (120PS) with manual or auto transmission and a more powerful 150PS 2.0-litre EcoBlue mild hybrid (mHEV).

The 1.5-litre EcoBlue with manual transmission is the best for low running costs (up to 67mpg combined and CO2 emissions as low as 108g/km), it will cost around £2000 more than the lowest powered petrol model. If you cover a lot of miles each year or intend to keep the vehicle for several years it will be the sensible choice.

The mild hybrid diesel will cost around £1000 more than the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel, it offers similar economy figures but with better performance figures it feels noticeably nippier, especially off the mark.

The most powerful diesel, a 2.0-litre 190PS EcoBlue is equipped with an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. It’s still economical with a combined fuel economy of up to 57mpg whilst it feels punchy, capable of 0-62mph in under 9 seconds and packing 295 lbs/ft of torque.
