Road Tax

It may have gone a little under the radar somewhat, but as outlined in  the government's budget, VED charges will increase in April 2019 again, in-line with inflation.

In real terms what does that mean for motorists and how much will you be paying?  ...... Well, for a lot of drivers it will mean an annual increase of £5, even some of the cleaner and more economical diesel, petrol and hybrid vehicles will see a first-year increase of £5, whilst cars emitting over 150g/km CO2 will be hit with a yearly increase of £15.

Buyers of new cars that fall into the high emissions bracket (over 255g/km) will be amongst the hardest hit with an increase in first year road tax costs of £65.

Owners of vehicles with a list price of £40,000 or more who pay 'premium' road tax will also see an increase of £10 from £310 to £320.

Owners of cleaner vehicles with emissions below 120g/km will escape any further VED price increases, whilst people driving full electric cars will continue to benefit from no VED charges.

The hike in VED charges may come as a surprise to many as they were never officially announced by the chancellor but instead were stealthily pushed through in the ‘Overview of Tax Legislation and Rates’ document.

The government has promised it will set aside funds raised from VED charges to finance much needed improvements, maintenance and repair of Britain’s motorways and major roads over the next 5-6 years.

You can use the virtual garage at www.uk-car-discount.co.uk to browse for new car deals. Look under the 'view technical data' tab in the emissions ICE section, to see which tax band the vehicle falls into.
