The New Toyota iQ

Toyota unveiled its super-compact iQ model at the Frankfurt Motor Show last month. Smaller even than the Toyota Aygo, the iQ concept has a range of new design and technology ideas and Toyota plans to have this new model on sale by 2009.
The tiny Toyota iQ is just under 3 metres in length, that is just slightly longer than the Smart Fortwo. Although it is not as long as the Toyota Aygo, it is the same height and width and provides space for 3 seats plus a luggage area or space for a child.
Because of its small size Toyota has been pretty radical in its design of this new model. Inside, the dashboard is on a simple panel and even the sat-nav and display screen equipment is a single pane on the dashboard.
To ensure adequate room for people and luggage, Toyota has really created a radically different car. Standard car components have been redesigned and moved about, or reduced in size – for example, the heating and ventilation system is much smaller than usual.
Wahai Hirai, manager of Toyota Motor Corporation’s design activities, said ‘The iQ concept is designed to reflect and enhance the lifestyle of its owners. In an urban environment, people want to express themselves through dynamic and on-the-edge design, but at the same time rational factors such as size, functionality and CO2 emissions cannot be ignored. Bringing these contradictory aims together in synergy was critical to the iQ concept, it’s a way of thinking we call the J-factor, a philosophy at the heart of all our activities’.
