Security Promoted At Car Insurance Awards

Thieves find new cars almost impossible to break into, according to experts and former criminals speaking at a British Insurance Car Security Awards yesterday.

Such features, including engine immobilisers, have resulted in reduced numbers of cars and vehicles being stolen across the UK.

The former thief, known as Paul, said stealing cars "just became too hard. Ten or 15 years ago I could break in to a car, attack the electrics to start the engine and then drive it off in under a minute.

"The immobilisers and alarms got better and better - now it is too difficult to bother."

He added that to steal a new car now "you need to have it towed away - or be in the possession of the key".

Citroen and Peugeot both receieved two awards each at the ceremony and Audi took the gong for best manufacturer.

Meanwhile, Renault, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz all received prizes, according to reports from the Scotsman.
