Ford intends to make around 86,000 S-Max and Galaxy models this year, which will go on sale throughout Europe next month.

Up to 550 models of the two new vehicles will be produced each day, together with 600 Ford Mondeo models when the plant in Genk operates at full capacity.

Mr Fleming commented: "The production of the new Ford S-MAX and Ford Galaxy mark the start of a new era of flexible manufacturing at Genk."

"To produce the new vehicles with best-in-class quality and efficiency, we invested more than ?715 million, primarily in a new flexible manufacturing system."

Meanwhile, Ford expects to make strong profits in 2006 both pre-tax and after tax has been deducted.

A spokesman said that though market conditions might be tough, sales should be on target to improve company growth.
