Volkswagen has revealed the VW Golf R 400 concept at Beijing Motor Show 2014
Volkswagen has revealed a new model Golf R 400 concept, at the Beijing Motor Show. The concept has marked 40 years since the VW Golf was first launched, with Volkswagen saying it ‘reflects the sporty potential of the latest model series.
The Golf R 400 has a mouth-watering power to weight ration of around 3.4bhp per kilogram - "racing car figures," explained a Volkswagen member of the board of management, Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser. And he dropped the hint that the car could make production at some stage as he went on to say: "What we have to do now is build it."
Having great retention of the iconic Golf shape, the low ride concept rides on new 19-inch alloy wheels and sits 40mm wider than the standard model. At the front of the Golf R 400 there’s a more prominent bumper design with carbon inserts, while a high-gloss black radiator grille with yellow Golf R detailing has also been added. The massively flared wheel arches are also said to be inspired by the 1988 Rallye Golf G60.
This new 400bhp monster is based on the standard Golf R, the concept features the same 2.0-litre TSI engine but it has been massively revised to produce 395bhp and 450Nm of torque – up from the standard Golf R’s 296bhp and 380Nm output. Power hits the ground via a six-speed DSG gearbox all-wheel drive system. The performance boost is enough to slash a second off the race from 0-62, now complete in less than 3.9 seconds. Top speed has also increased to a hair-raising 174mph.
At the rear of the new Golf R 400, new warped motorsport carbon effect splitters merge with a protruding diffuser and two centrally mounted exhaust pipes replace the quad tailpipe setup on the standard Golf R – paying tribute to the design of the 2002 Golf R32. A new black roof and extreme carbon fibre mirror caps complete the powerful look.
The no expense spared theme is continued inside, with Alcantara and carbon leather bucket seats. The seats, steering wheel, door cards and floor mats are all neatly trimmed in decorative yellow stitching. A glossy carbon fibre finish has been applied to dash and centre console.
