Electric Cr Charging and Solid State battery developmentsMajor automakers are working to bring the longer-range, faster-charging, more affordable technology to electric vehicles and Nissan is projecting a date. Nissan recently hosted an exhibit at its Global Headquarters Gallery in Yokohama, Japan, called Nissan Futures which focused on Nissan's pursuit of the "future of sustainable mobility" concept. Nissan announced that they plan to have a production EV with solid batteries in 2028, representing a huge leap forward in electric vehicle battery technology.

Solid-state batteries, also known as all-solid-state sodium batteries or ASSBs, represent the future of automotive battery technology due to their promise of longer ranges, shorter charge times, and less risk of fire compared to traditional lithium-ion battery cells. However, before these new technologies can become mainstream there remain challenges such as cost and life span that must be solved. Nissan is not alone in their ambitions either; other automakers including Ford, BMW and Toyota are also investing heavily in this new technology with plans to introduce some version of the tech as early as 2025 or 2026.

Nissan's plans include getting a pilot production plant producing the first solid-state batteries by 2025 and completing the initial application engineering by 2026 before introducing a vehicle application potentially available for consumers in 2028. Nissan is working with researchers at the University of Oxford on this project to get the cost down compared with standard lithium ion batteries by 50 percent while doubling the energy density and offering three times the charging speed.

Are New Solid State Car Batteries - the future?

In addition to Nissan's plans for next-gen li-ion packs by 2028 cobalt free li-ion packs could reduce battery costs by up to 65 percent according to Nissan senior vice president for research and development David Moss. This could result in Nissan becoming once again becoming a leader in lower cost mass market EVs through advancements such as their new Nissan Ariya model coupled with solid state packs.

Toyota has also partnered up with Panasonic on developing solid state batteries which will be used in a hybrid vehicle set for release in 2025 while start-up company Solid Power is currently producing test batteries for both Ford and BMW vehicles. The race is on between major automakers to explore the potential of these new technologies and bring them into commercial reality sooner rather than later. With current projections from Nissan indicating 2028 as their target date it appears that Nissan may just come out ahead when it comes bringing this revolutionary technology into everyday use for consumers worldwide.
