Ford has recently signed up to a partnership with Fiat to produce cars jointly. It is thought the move will help reduce research and development costs for their cheap new cars.

Experts predict the partnership will lead to the development of a new small car for the US market. However, Dave Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, expressed doubts over the profitability of such a venture.

He said: "While several automakers have toyed with the idea of a mini for the U.S., it's never really worked out because it's hard to make money on small cars."

Ford and Fiat will follow Citroen, Toyota and Peugeot, who all released jointly developed cheap new cars.
