New Car Sales Up in 2007
Published Date: 28th Jan 2008
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has reported that registrations of new cars increased by 2.5% in 2007. With 2,404,007 new cars registered in 2007, this was much better than expected for the car industry.
In the final quarter of 2007, sales rose by 4.6% which shows the strongest growth since the first quarter in 2004. Paul Everitt of the SMMT commented ‘Last year, demand for new cars was stronger than many had predicted. There is little sign that the US credit crisis or rising fuel prices have affected demand and we foresee only limited changes through 2008. The UK economy currently remains resilient and the new car market is ultra-competitive’.
Strongest sellers in 2008 were fuel-efficient diesel models and supermini/small family cars. The average new car CO2 figure dropped by 1.4% to 164.9g/km which is a drop of 13.1% since 1997.
The Ford Focus has continued as the top selling car in 2007 in the UK plus the top-selling car manufacturer in 2007 was Ford. In second place for car sales in 2007 was the Vauxhall Astra, third was the Ford Fiesta, in fourth place was the Vauxhall Corsa, in fifth the VW Golf, sixth went to the Peugeot 207, in seventh place was the BMW 3 Series, in eighth the Renault Megane, in ninth the Renault Clio and finally the Vauxhall Vectra came in at tenth place.
