63 Plate New Car Sales Forecast

Published Date: 2nd Sep 2013

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) the introduction of the new ‘63’ registration in September is expected to continue the success seen by the 13 plate so far in 2013. Since March, 1,115,459 cars have been registered on the 13 plate, outselling the previous nine registration plates. This reflects the strength of the UK new car market and the continuing upturn, which has seen growth for the past 17 months now.

Other factors in the continued upturn in new car sales are thought to be the continued improvement in technology from manufacturer’s enabling them to produce more and more efficient new vehicles. These super efficient vehicles offer low CO2 emissions and excellent fuel economy. The attractive lower running costs of a brand new car continue to persuade UK motorists to buy new vehicles with the small car and supermini sectors proving very popular (the Ford Fiesta is the UK’s best-selling car).

Sales of hybrid cars continue to be on the up and although the initial cost of a hybrid vehicle can be higher than a conventional fuel car, running costs are low and being kinder to the environment has financial benefits including road tax exemption and far fewer visits to fill-up!.

Approximately 390,000 new cars are expected to be sold in September, on the new 63-plate equating to a spend of around £6 billion by UK motorists in the first 30 days of the 63 plate’s introduction.
