Motor Industry Leading Emissions Cuts

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has announced that it is taking the initiative to drive down carbon emissions on Britain's roads.

SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan said: "There are 850,000 people working in the UK motor industry and we are all concerned about the impact our industry has on the environment."

He added: "This is why we have invested so heavily in research and development of new technologies that have helped us to create cleaner vehicles."

The SMMT also claims the percentage of new cars in the lowest three excise duty bands for emissions has more than quadrupled since 1997. In the same time the number of vehicles in the top three bands has almost halved.
