Mazda sold more sports cars than any of its rivals in the UK last year.

Total RX-8 sales in 2005 were 4,971 and the company sold 5,812 MX-5s.

Mazda believes the figures would have been even more impressive had supply shortages for the new Mazda RX-8 not dented sales.

The MX-5 and RX-8 also won the Best Open Top and Best Coupe categories respectively at the What Car? Awards 2006.

Rob Lindley, managing director of Mazda UK, believes that the sports car and coupe segment will grow this year and he told easier.com that he expects sales of 9,000 MX-5s and 5,000 Mazda RX-8s in 2006.

"If you add in our newly-launched sports models, Mazda has a really strong, broad-based performance range," he said.

The Vauxhall Tigra outsold the MX-5 last year but the company only held an 8.1 per cent segment share overall.
