It has been revealed that drivers have wasted more than £2 million by not renewing their driving licenses online.

DVLA statistics show that between April 2020 and March 2021 approximately 23% of driving license renewal applications were done either by post or at the post office.

DVLA has pointed out the online service is quicker and cheaper, it currently costs £17 to renew your photocard driving license by post or at the post office, whereas the online service costs £14.

The online service can be accessed here and you can also track the progress of your driving license renewal here.

DVLA has also pointed out the online service is much quicker, in 2021 DVLA postal applications have been taking up to ten weeks to process, partly due to the impact of COVID and industrial action. Drivers using the online service should get their driving license within 5 working days in most cases.

Over 70’s should note that renewing their driving license online is free and beware of third-party unofficial websites that are offering to process over 70s driving licenses for a fee. These websites are not officially endorsed by the DVLA, and they are merely taking the users details and passing them through DVLA’s free service.
