Motorists are being warned about the perils of driving in such high winds (100 mph ) after several accidents involving high sided vehicles yesterday, the advice to drivers is to only make essential journeys and avoid exposed motorways.

Scotland in particular has been on red alert with hurricane force winds forecast in the next few days it is essential drivers take extra care as widespread disruption is expected to the road and rail network.

Homes have been damaged and buses have been taken off the road in certain areas after several were blown over in the gales and the Airports in London, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh all suffered from the high winds with flight cancellations and delays.

Police and Emergency services are all on high alert with huge numbers of call outs expected in the coming days, and the advice is to stay indoors in areas affected as many roads will be closed due to the severe gales making travelling extremely difficult and dangerous.

If you have to go out and make your journey people are advised to check weather forecasts and weather conditions to ensure your route is problem free and accessible.
