Volkswagen to go on turbo charge
Even cheap new Volkswagens could soon come equipped with a turbo.
According to reports from Automotive News a supercharger-turbocharger system could soon be fitted to the likes of the cheap new VW Golf and cheap new Volkswagen Polo.
The system has the working title of SuperTurbo Compounding and promises to increase the power and fuel efficiency of VW's smaller petrol engines by 15 to 20 per cent over conventional turbos.
The road-going debut of the SuperTurbo should come in a new Golf next year when it is melded with a 1.4 litre FSI direct injection petrol engine. Expectations are that it will feed the new VW Golf with between 140bhp and 170bhp. |

Rumour has it that a new VW Golf equipped with SuperTurbo will be displayed at the Frankfurt International Motorshow in September, where the German manufacturer is also expected to reveal plans for 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre SuperTurbo versions.
The 1.6 should deliver 190bhp while the 2.0-litre will push out a whopping 240bhp.
The SuperTurbo innovation could prove hugely important to Volkswagen as competition in the hot hatch market reaches fever pitch later this year.
The new VW Golf, new Vauxhall Astra VRX and new Ford Focus ST will all be on Britain's roads by the end of the year, and have all been receiving superb reviews.
