New Honda CR-V

After its debut at the Paris Motor Show in September, the third-generation Honda CR-V goes on sale in the UK from January 2007. Honda is aware of the current adverse publicity about 4x4 vehicles and has emphasised that the new CR-V is around the same size as a Ford Mondeo estate, that most of the time it runs in front-wheel drive mode, and that it uses less fuel and produces lower carbon dioxide emissions than plenty of standard cars.

The main rivals to the Honda CR-V are the popular Toyota RAV4 and the Nissan X-Trail, plus the pricier BMW X3 and new Land Rover Freelander. Built at its successful plant in Swindon, the CR-V comes in two engine sizes – a new 2.0 litre petrol engine giving 148bhp and a 2.2 diesel engine with 138bhp.

The new Honda CR-V has a lower centre of gravity (reduced by 35mm), a wider stance (increased by 30mm) and a number of changes to steering and suspension geometry to help enhance the CR-V’s handling characteristics.   There are 3 trim levels – the entry-level SE which comes with electric windows, MP3 socket, audio controls on the steering wheel and air conditioning as standard.    The
ES level adds front and rear parking sensors, leather on the steering wheel and gear lever, front foglights and dual-zone climate control.   Equipment on top-spec EX version includes electric driver's seat adjustment, leather upholstery, sat-nav, a rear-view camera and a panoramic glass roof.
