The highly prestigious WhatCar? Car of the Year 2008 awards were held in January. As usual there were several category awards and an overall Car of the Year 2008 winner.
The overall winner was the Jaguar XF 2.70 litre V6 which also won the WhatCar? Executive Car category. What Car? commented on the Jaguar XF ‘What we most admire about the XF is the way it is still very much a Jaguar, but altogether more modern. You are, for example, virtually entombed in wood and leather, but this time it doesn’t make you feel time-locked in a bygone era.’
The overall winner from last year won another award this year. The Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 litre Club won the best Supermini award. Other winners were VW with the VW Golf 1.4 litre TSI 120 Match winning the Small Family Car award and the VW Eos 2.0 litre T-FSI Sport winning the category for Open-Top models.
Ford also won a couple of awards for the new model Ford Mondeo – the Ford Mondeo 2.0 litre TDCi 140 Zetec won best Family Car award whilst the Ford Mondeo 2.0 litre TDCi Zetec won best Estate Car.
Audi won best Coupe category with its Audi TT 2.0 litre T-FSI and the stunning new Audi R8 won the award for best Performance Car. Also included in the award categories were the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso 1.6 litre HDi SX for best MPV and the best Compact Executive award went to the BMW 320d ES.
