Audi introduced a new concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show last November – called the metroproject quattro, the concept car is a supermini set to rival the Mini Cooper. It is set to appear at the Paris Motor Show this September as a production model and to be available to buy in Spring 2009.
The metroproject quattro has a 1.4litre TFSI petrol engine but is also able to run on electricity – or a combination of both. With this hybrid technology the Audi concept gives good fuel economy and produces low emissions. Audi say it is able to achieve 57.7mpg combined with CO2 emissions of 112g/km. However, Audi say this will not hinder the car’s performance, with 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 125mph.
The interior of the Audi supermini concept car features aluminium trim throughout, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, a dashboard which angles towards the driver and there are four individual seats. One very clever feature is a new hand-held touchscreen gadget which allows access to a phone, a sat-nav system and an MP3 player plus you can use it to start the car – the device can simply be plugged into the central console.
The new Audi concept supermini is significantly shorter than the Audi A3 but passenger space is the same due to its similar height and width. However, luggage space is limited to 240 litres because the electric motor is housed in the rear of the car.
