Increased engine options for the cheap new Zafira

A 1.8-litre ECOTEC engine has been added to the cheap new Vauxhall Zafira line-up.

This is the first appearance of the power plant, which should be available in a range of cheap new Vauxhalls over the coming years.

The manufacturer claims that it is one of the most powerful 1.8-litre engines on the market but the stat that makes it stand out from the crowd is the power delivery range.

Vauxhall claims that 90 per cent of the maximum power output is available from 2200rpm to 6200rpm.

In plain English this means that acceleration is at its best over a good range of engine speeds making for lively performance and reducing the need to change gear.

Meanwhile the weight of the engine block has been reduced by 20 per cent and the engine as a whole has been stiffened and made three per cent lighter.

A cheap new Zafira with the ECOTEC engine will also boast improved emissions with the engine producing 187 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre, putting it in emissions bracket Euro 4.
