Blind speed record broken
A new BMW M5 and a few acres of open tarmac have helped Mike Newman and his Speed of Sight team break their own blind land speed record.
Tuesday October 11th saw Mike take his 507bhp new BMW M5 to an average speed of 167.32 mph back and forth over a measured mile. Alone in the car Mike hit a top speed of 178.5mph.
The fast new BMW run beat Mike's own record of 144.7mph, which was set in a new Jaguar in 2003. For this attempt the new BMW M5's engine was delimited, offering a maximum speed of 205mph, while GPS and data-logging equipment kept him on the right track.

Mike had hoped to top 200mph but was still delighted to have broken the record and dedicated the success to the charity VISION 2020: The Right To Sight on World Sight Day.
The charity hopes to eradicate preventable blindness within the next 15 years.
Commenting on its work Mike said: "Not enough is done to help the visual impaired communities around the world.
"In many cases, increasing the levels of Vitamin A in a child's diet or a simple cataract operation would transform a life. I hope this record draws increased attention to this very important global issue."
