These included the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes A-Class, Vauxhall Zafira and Volkswagen Passat. Meanwhile the Citroen C1, Smart Forfour, Suzuki Swift, Fiat Stilo and Honda FR-V all earned four stars.

The most successful vehicle on test thought was Peugeot's new low cost mini MPV, the 1007. With its eight airbags, pre-tensioned front seatbelts and ABS braking system the Peugeot 1007 won five stars for occupant protection, three for child protection, and two for pedestrian protection thanks to its new "cushioned" bonnet.

Along with the Renault Modus and the new Renault Clio the 1007 is only the third supermini to be awarded a five star rating, and illustrates the recent safety improvement in cheaper new cars.

Commenting on the results, Claes Tingvall, the chairman of Euro NCAP said, "It is gratifying to see that more than half of the cars tested in this phase achieved the top five-star rating for adult occupant protection and that three of the cars achieved the 'Best in Class' accolade, giving Europe's car buyers a wider range of safe cars than ever before to choose from."
