New Vauxhall Corsa VXR Review

The new Vauxhall Corsa VXR hothatch has been unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2007.

Set to compete against the Renaultsport Clio 197 and the Mini Cooper S, the new Corsa VXR has a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine with a six-speed gearbox. The 1.6-litre turbocharged engine is already used in the Vauxhall Meriva VXR, but is tuned for sharper responses and greater performance. Producing 200bhp, the Corsa VXR gives 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 140mph.

The new Corsa VXR features a mesh front grille, side skirts and roof spoiler, optional 18" alloys and triangular mirrors and exhaust tailpipe. The centre exit exhaust is similar to the Vauxhall Astra VXR and the rear also features fish-like ‘gills’ slashed into the rear bumper and a small spoiler just above the rear window. Inside the Corsa VXR has more sports features including Recaro sports seats, drilled alloy pedals and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.

Auto Express has recently test driven the new Vauxhall Corsa VXR and comments

‘The new flagship Corsa is the best VXR yet. With a highly capable chassis even in standard form, Vauxhall says its handling is better than that of the Astra, and we agree. Performance from the 1.6-litre engine is strong, if a bit manic when cornering, and the fuel economy figure is impressive. While the Corsa can’t match the Clio 197’s finesse, it’s cheaper and offers greater scope for owners keen on customising and modifying their hot hatch.’

Only 2,500 Corsa VXR’s will be available for sale in the UK each year. The new range of Vauxhall Corsa’s are proving extremely popular in the UK and What Car? recently gave the Vauxhall Corsa its Car of the Year 2007 Award.
