Mercedes Benz diesels break records
The new Mercedes V6 CDI diesel engine has become a record breaker in one of the most epic endurance tests ever.
The engine, which will replace the existing five and six cylinder in-line engines this summer, was fitted in three standard spec production Mercedes E320 CDI models. These were then sent out onto the test track for an epic 30-day record bid.
Over the month long test each car covered 100,000 miles at an average speed of around 225 kmph, without any technical problems.
Not only was the engine itself subjected to extreme conditions, but the electrics, suspension and chassis also survived a battering from the uneven road surface.
Mercedes Benz has been one of the pioneers of diesel powered cars, launching its first diesel passenger model in 1935 in the form of the 260D.
Diesel engines are offered across the modern day Mercedes Benz range and with their improved fuel efficiency they offer some of the best new Mercedes deals on the market.
The growing popularity of the Mercedes Benz diesel range has seen the marque shift more than seven million diesel passenger cars in its lifetime.
If the growth that has been in Merc's diesel sales over the last decade continues then the market share of diesel models is set to increase even further over the coming years.
