Citroen wins 2006 crash test award

Citroen has won the 2006 What Car? Safety Award, showing that it has done the most for improving road safety over the last year.

The Citroen C8 won five stars for occupant protection, marking the first MPV in Ireland to be given such a rating.

The Citroen C6 flagship contributed to this success after it obtained record results in the Euro NCAP ratings for pedestrian protection. It was the first car to receive a full four-star award in the test, totalling 100 points.

The cars active bonnet, which limits pedestrian injuries on impact, contributed to its success alongside the lane departure warning system, automatic wipers and directional headlamps.

Meanwhile, the C4 achieved the second highest rating ever in the Euro NCAP crash tests, achieving a score of 99 points across the categories of pedestrian protection, occupant protection and child protection.

For occupant protection alone the C5 remains the highest ranked car, while the C8 was also awarded five stars in this category.

Steve Fowler, group editor at What Car?, said: "Many car makers have improved their crash test performance or introduced technologies to help make our roads safer, but Citroen has done the most."
