BMW launches cheap new 5-series

BMW has launched what it claims is a new low cost BMW 5-series.

According to the German manufacturer, the cheap new BMW 5-series will be the cheapest ownership car in its class in terms of insurance and fuel consumption, and will feature sprightly performance.

The new BMW 520d will come equip with the same two-litre diesel engine as the new BMW 320d, offering 163bhp, and shifting the 5-series from 0-60 in 8.6 seconds.

Initially available with a six speed manual gearbox, BMW will introduce an automatic option early in 2006.

Also as standard in the entry level model are eight air bags, 16-inch alloy wheels and traction control.

Customers wanting more toys can upgrade to the SE model which includes Park Distance Control; or the M Sport variant, which offers 18-inch alloy wheels and body styling extras.

BMW has announced that the list price will be £26,000 and with BMW models currently available on excellent finance packages through online car sales sites customers may be able to find even cheaper deals.

The launch of the cheap new 5-series should add an extra dimension to new BMW car sales when it is introduced to the range in September this year. According to BMW, sales of the 5-series are already outstripping the new Mercedes Benz E-Class, the new Audi A6 and the new Jaguar S-Type.
