2020 Ford Puma Specs and Trim Levels Compared

Published Date: 24th Sep 2020

The Puma is Ford’s stylish looking compact SUV built on the same platform as the Fiesta. It is a wider, longer version of the Fiesta if you like, so interior space is closer to that of the Ford Focus.

2020 Ford Pum ST LineAs you’d expect from a vehicle that shares the Fiesta’s underpinnings, it handles and rides very well, the higher stature of the Puma means it’s never gong to match the superb handling of the Fiesta but as far as Small SUVs go it is excellent.

The Puma also shares some of the same excellent EcoBoost engines featuring cylinder deactivation and mild hybrid technology. These superb little engines deliver an excellent blend of performance and economy.

Interior upholstery is a stylish ‘Ebony’ cloth with front ‘lumbar massage’ seats, there is a leather steering wheel, handbrake & gear knob plus front and rear floor mats with tie down rings.

2020 ford puma titanium interiorAt the front is centre console with two illuminated cup holders, an armrest and a storage area with USB and12v sockets.

For comfort there’s electronic automatic temperature control (EATC) plus front and rear ‘one touch’ electric windows.

The infotainment system is an 8-inch colour TFT touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC 3 Navigation platform, as the name suggests it includes native sat nav and there’s Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support for smartphone mirroring.

There are 2 x USB ports and Bluetooth connectivity for making handsfree phone calls and music streaming. DAB radio is standard and a wireless smartphone charging pad provides convenient charging (for supported phones).

The entertainment system also includes FordPass Connect (modem) for WIFI hotspot, and connectivity to services like live traffic. The included Emergency Assistance feature can automatically contact the emergency services in the event of an accident and send your GPS coordinates.

Driver Aids & Safety Tech

There’s a generous list of driver aids and safety tech including automatic headlights with auto high beam, rain sensing windscreen wipers,  a tyre pressure monitoring system, rear parking sensors, cruise control with intelligent speed limiter (uses traffic sign recognition to adjust your speed accordingly), emergency brake assist with pedestrian recognition, a lane keeping assist and lane departure warning system.

You also get as standard Ford’s excellent QuickClear heated windscreen feature and a Thatcham Cat 1 alarm.

There are four selectable drive modes; Normal, Sport, Eco, Trail and Slippery, the two latter options to tackle more demanding conditions by improving traction and handling.

The Ford Puma scored the maximum 5-star rating in NCAP safety tests, other security/safety features include front, Side and Curtain driver and front passenger's airbags, electronic stability control (EAC), emergency brake warning (automatic flashing of brake lights under heavy braking), traction control including hill start assist,  anti-lock braking system (ABS) and emergency brake assist (EBA).

Engines

Titanium trim gets a choice of three petrol engines, the only automatic on offer is a 1.0 litre EcoBoost with 7-speed automatic transmission.

The automatic does not feature mild hybrid technology, it is more expensive than the mild hybrid manual models and it does not match up on economy figure either. Combined fuel economy is somewhere around 46mpg (WLTP) and CO2 emissions are 138g/km, it does not make a whole lot of sense from a financial perspective and it doesn’t feel as plucky as the manual models either.

Unless an automatic gearbox is a must you’ll be well advised to plump for one of either the 125bhp or 155bhp 1.0 litre EcoBoost mHEV engines with 6-speed manual gearbox. Both feature mild hybrid technology that utilises brake regeneration technology to charge a small 48v battery.  The additional ‘recycled’ energy is then re-used when the car is accelerating to reduce the load on the petrol engine and aid fuel economy.

Both mild hybrids offer a good mix of performance and economy, the 125bhp mild hybrid models return up to 50mpg combined (WLTP) and it offers combined CO2 emissions of 127g/km (WLTP). It feels punchy enough too, capable of 0-62mph in a tad under 10 seconds.

The more powerful 155bhp mild hybrids are around a second quicker from 0-62mph and return almost identical economy figures.

The following can be purchased as optional extras for the Ford Puma Titanium trim:
